Auckland Airport - 2017

THE LANDING PUBLIC OPEN SPACE

The Landing Public Open Space is one of several spaces to be implemented as part of an overall master planning vision to ensure busy industrial activities and workers are provided with opportunities for recreation and appreciation of the immediate coastal environment. Designs were developed in collaboration with Surface Design Inc. and in consultation with Airport, Local Authority and Iwi representatives, to inform design development. Flexible green open spaces provide opportunities to walk, cycle and socialise, whilst overlooking tidal estuarine environments. Low impact solutions that respect historic land use were pursued, and references to pastoral activities and pre European settlement adopted, including references to waka paddles (hoe), repurposed fence posts and water trough; reinvigorating to provide new value and meaning. Revitalisation of coastal interface with native revegetation planting also supports positive environmental outcomes and contrasts strong forms associated with the adjacent MPI headquarters.
